How Wind Takes Roofs Apart
Wind doesn't push roofs off; it lifts them. Gusts create uplift at edges, rakes, and ridges — the same physics as an airplane wing — and any shingle with a compromised seal strip becomes a tab for the wind to grab. One lifted course exposes the fasteners of the next, and damage cascades. That's why wind damage concentrates at eaves, edges, and ridgelines, and why the deciding factor is usually installation quality: fastener count and placement, sealed starter courses, and edge metal done right.

Wind Ratings, Fastening, and What "High-Wind Install" Means
Shingle packaging advertises wind ratings — 110, 130 mph — but the fine print ties those numbers to installation details: nail count, nail placement, and starter-course sealing. The same shingle installed with four nails carries a lower rating than with six; nails driven high on the shingle instead of on the line surrender the rating entirely. This is why identical-looking roofs perform so differently in the same microburst, and why our installs in wind-exposed zones use six-nail patterns, ring-shank fasteners where spec calls for them, and hand-sealed rakes and eaves as standard. Are gusts here really strong enough to matter?
Monsoon microbursts routinely produce 60–80 mph outflow — hurricane-force in the gusts — concentrated in bursts that find weak edges. Mountain gap winds and plateau gusts add sustained loading. Arizona wind won't take a healthy, well-fastened roof; it specializes in finishing marginal ones.
Does homeowners insurance cover wind damage?
