Hail Damage Repair
Hail damage inspection, documentation, and repair.
Hail is the sneakiest roof damage in Arizona: a storm passes, the roof looks fine from the driveway, and three years later the ceiling stains — right after the insurance claim window has closed. Hail damage roof repair done right starts with a proper inspection and honest documentation, and that is exactly where CraftBuilt's hail team begins.
What Hail Actually Does to a Roof
Hail rarely punches visible holes. On asphalt shingles it crushes granules into the mat, leaving soft dark bruises that expose the mat to UV; the mat then decays until it cracks and leaks. On tile, impacts crack tile and fracture corners. On metal, hail dents — usually cosmetic, occasionally functional at seams and fasteners. The damage compounds silently, which is why insurers put time limits on hail claims and why a free inspection after any hailstorm is simply prudent.
Signs Hail Hit Your Roof
- Dents in gutters, downspouts, and AC fins — the ground-level tell
- Granule piles at downspout outlets after the storm
- Dark spots or bruising visible on shingle surfaces
- Cracked or corner-broken tiles
- Neighbors' roofs sprouting inspection crews — hail is a neighborhood event
Our Hail Damage Process
- Free inspection: we survey slopes, count impacts per test square the way adjusters do, and photograph everything.
- Straight verdict: real hail damage, cosmetic wear, or nothing actionable — we tell you which, and we don't manufacture claims.
- Claim support when warranted: our insurance restoration team prepares documentation, meets your adjuster on the roof, and speaks their language.
- Repair or replacement, from targeted shingle repair through full replacement when the bruising is roof-wide.
Hail Country in Arizona
Hail concentrates where terrain stirs the monsoon: the high plateau around Snowflake and the White Mountains, the Huachuca corridor at Sierra Vista — where hail claims are a substantial share of our work — and monsoon cells across the Valley and Payson Rim country. After any of these areas takes a storm, we run inspection routes; getting on the list costs nothing.
Does insurance cover hail damage in Arizona?
Most homeowner policies cover hail as a named peril, subject to your deductible and, increasingly, to roof age schedules. The claim succeeds or fails on documentation — which is why our inspections photograph and measure to adjuster standards from the start.
Is metal roof hail damage covered?
Often, though some policies carry cosmetic-damage exclusions for metal. We assess whether dents are cosmetic or functional and document accordingly — the distinction decides the claim.
How Adjusters Actually Assess Hail — and Why It Matters
Hail claims are decided by a specific ritual: the test square. An adjuster chalks a 10-by-10-foot square on each roof slope and counts qualifying impacts inside it; enough hits per square, slope by slope, and the roof qualifies for replacement rather than patch repair. Knowing this changes how damage should be documented — which is why our inspectors mark and photograph test squares the same way adjusters do, before the adjuster arrives. It's also why a general "the roof looks fine" from the ground means nothing: qualifying bruises are fist-height views, not curbside ones. When our documentation and the adjuster's count disagree, the photographs argue for you.
What size hail damages a roof?
Rule of thumb: quarter-size (about one inch) begins damaging aged asphalt; golf-ball hail damages nearly everything. But age and temperature matter as much as stone size — brittle, sun-aged shingles bruise under smaller hail than fresh ones. Arizona's high-UV climate means our roofs are often more vulnerable than the hail maps suggest.
My neighbor's roof was approved — will mine be?
Same storm, adjacent roofs, different outcomes happen constantly: slope orientation, roof age, and material all change the count. A neighbor's approval is an excellent reason to get inspected, not a guarantee. The inspection is free and the answer is yours either way.
What hail actually does to a shingle
- 1Hailstones — damage typically starts around 1" diameter
- 2Circular bruise — usually invisible from the ground
- 3Exposed fiberglass mat where granules were knocked away
- 4Granule scatter and hairline cracking that shorten roof life
