What Shingle Damage Looks Like

Repair Technique Matters

Bad shingle repair is easy to spot in a year: mismatched tabs, exposed nails smeared with tar, and re-broken seals around the patch. Our repairs follow the material's rules — replacement shingles woven into surrounding courses, nails placed and sealed to spec, seal strips re-bonded, and product matched by brand and color line wherever the roof's vintage allows. On older discontinued colors we'll show you the closest match and where on the roof it will read least visibly.

Repair or Replace? The Honest Math

A repair makes sense when damage is localized and the field of the roof has years left. It stops making sense when we're chasing failures across different slopes — that's a roof announcing the end, and each patch buys months, not years. We'll give you both numbers, repair and replacement, and our recommendation with reasons. High-wind zones like Sierra Vista and Snowflake's open plateau also change the math: upgrading to high-wind-rated product during replacement beats repairing standard product annually.

Can you repair just one side of my roof?

Yes — slope-by-slope work is common after directional wind events, and insurance scopes are often written exactly that way through our claims team.

Matching Old Shingles: The Craft Nobody Mentions

The technical repair is often the easy half; making it disappear is the craft. Shingle lines get discontinued, colors weather uniquely to each roof's sun exposure, and a perfect-off-the-pallet match can read glaringly new against fifteen-year-old granules. Our tricks of the trade: sourcing from the same manufacturer's current equivalent line, harvesting donor shingles from hidden areas (behind chimneys, inside future skylight cutouts) for visible repairs, and placing unavoidable mismatches on the least-seen slopes. On repairs after partial storm damage, insurance sometimes owes for reasonable matching — an argument our claims team knows how to document when a discontinued shingle makes true matching impossible.

A few shingles blew off — can I just glue them back?

If they're intact and recovered promptly, re-securing originals is sometimes viable — done with correct fasteners and seal-strip re-bonding, not construction adhesive. Creased or torn shingles are done; a folded mat is broken internally even when it lies flat again. We reuse what's genuinely sound and replace what isn't.

Why do my shingles keep failing in the same spot?

Recurring same-spot failures point upstream: turbulence around a roof feature, a fastening defect from original installation, or heat concentration off a wall or window reflection. Replacing the shingle again treats the symptom; we look for the cause and fix that instead.

Are three-tab shingles still worth repairing?

Where the roof has life left, yes — and three-tab is actually easier to match than architectural. But a failing three-tab roof near end of life is usually better upgraded: modern architectural product outperforms it in wind for a modest premium at replacement time.
